On a monthly basis our members consistently put on a mini-orchid show right in our meeting room. SEPOS show table is known up and down the east coast for the quantity and quality of the plants shown by members. From tiny miniatures that fit in the palm of your hand with room to spare all the way up to the 'hand truck' plants that require several people to carry them into the room... our show table covers every group and truly contains something for everyone. Bring your camera because you will want to take pictures of these spectacular specimens.
Before our meeting begins our resident panel of American Orchid Society judges often with the rapt attention of several students or curious onlookers, evaluate each plant on the show table. Plants are judged by different standards than for AOS judging but with very strict attention to culture, historical value, species seldom seen, and particularly outstanding achievement in culture and presentation. Best Grown awards are often presented within several groups. Best Grown awards are given to plants which exhibit a clearly superior level of culture and are as much an award to the grower as to the plant itself. To the casual eye they may appear to be simply flowers but for some of them, many many years of careful attention have gone into producing flowers and keeping a healthy plant.
Members whose plants are selected for recognition receive points depending on the kind of plants awarded. These points accumulate during our season which runs from September to June. At the banquet meeting each June, the highest award points winners are announced and each receives a plant selected especially for them by our cracker-jack team of gift plant buyers.
Following our presentation for the evening two AOS judges will review the plants which were awarded, often calling upon the grower of the plant for historical information. Many times they will share with the group background information on plants that can only be gained by years of study and attention to trends and the orchid market.
